1.  Check your fluids
Oil:  Your engine’s lubricant – not enough causes excessive wear and tear on your engine.  Engines fail when oil levels are too low or nonexistent.  When it gets dirty, it adds to engine wear and tear, so regularly scheduled  maintenance is the best thing you can do to keep your engine clean and running longer.  See 2. below.
Water:  Your radiator circulates water to keep your moving parts cool.  Not enough water causes your engine to overheat, and running it too long without proper water levels will cause your radiator to crack and your engine to fail.
Transmission fluid:  This is your transmission’s lubricant – not enough can cause wear and tear.
Power Steering fluid:  Not having enough will bring you back to the good ol’ days before power steering, which by today’s standards, is very difficult.  It is like turning a wheel that doesn’t want to move.
Windshield wiper fluid:  You do not want to get caught on the passes without it.  A spray of mud from an 18-wheeler can obstruct your vision and the blades will only make it worse if you don’t have ample fluid.

2.  Change your oil.
Nothing can go further fin extending the life of your engine than regularly scheduled oil and oil filter changes.  A clean, lubricated engine will outlast its dirty counterpart!

3.  Maintain correct tire pressure.
Not only do your tires wear more evenly, but your traction is more balanced and the maneuverability of your car isn’t compromised.  Uneven or low tire pressure can cause damage to your tires and create safety issues in some circumstances.
